Healthy Eating on a Budget

Planning family meals ahead can help you save money at the grocery store, plus save you time and effort. Use the money saving tips below and start saving today!
- Plan meals and snacks for several days in advance and include a variety of healthy foods.
- Check for foods you have on hand and make a shopping list of what you will need for your meal plan. This will help you avoid buying unnecessary items.
- Watch newspaper ads for weekly specials and clip coupons for items you use. Be flexible with your meal plan to take advantage of in-store specials. Know the prices of items you buy often so you recognize a bargain when you see it.
- Look for store brand items as they are usually cheaper than brand name items. Check higher and lower shelves for less costly items.
- Avoid shopping when tired, hungry, or rushed. If possible, shop alone. While shopping can provide children with a good learning experience, shopping with children may prompt you to make purchases you did not intend.
- Learn your store layout to save time. Organize your shopping list in store order. Only go down the aisles that include items on your shopping list.
