MEDICARE PART D: PRESCRIPTION DRUG INSURANCE

Already Enrolled or Not Taking Prescription Drugs

If you are already enrolled in a Medicare Part D plan , you have the option to continue that same plan, change to a different plan, or drop your present plan. If you want to continue insurance coverage of your prescription drugs, do not drop your current plan. If you want to continue coverage, consider the following:

1. Are all my prescription drugs included in the plan formulary?
2. Am I paying the lowest possible cost for the coverage I need?
3. Does my current plan offer some or adequate coverage through the coverage gap?
4. Are there no or few restrictions for use and purchase of the drugs in my plan?
5. Does my plan sponsor provide me with adequate service?

You may need to use the Medicare Plan Finder Tool to be sure your current plan meets these criteria.

If you are SATISFIED that your current plan meets all of the above criteria, DO NOTHING to continue to use the same plan.

If you are NOT SATISFIED that your current plan meets all of the above criteria, enroll in a new plan. Enrollment in a new plan during the open enrollment period will, as of January 1, automatically drop you from your current (no longer preferred) plan.

If you are on Medicare and currently not taking any drugs
but anticipate you will need coverage in the future, you may still want to consider one of the plans with a small monthly premium.  This will enable you to avoid paying a 1% per month penalty of the national base premium ($1.91) added to your monthly premium.   Consider the peace of mind it might bring knowing you will have help to pay for medications in the future.
