Mission/Goals

Mission/Goals:

The Family Nutrition Program (FNP) teaches people the importance of making healthier food choices and how to best provide for their families when resources are limited.

FNP's major goal is to make people aware that their diets are linked directly to their health. The program helps people eligible for food stamps to become educated about nutrition, food safety, and food budgeting. The FNP Extension educators and Nutrition Assistants live in the community and understand the needs of families. They deliver nutrition education in a variety of ways including:

  • School programs
  • Hands-on learning experiences
  • Food demonstrations
  • Small group discussions
  • Educational displays
  • Handouts
  • Newsletters

FNP focuses on encouraging healthier eating habits early in a child's life. The Family Nutrition Program's educators and nutrition assistants, assisted by classroom teachers, provide hands-on learning experiences for children. By learning healthy practices early, children will be more likely to make healthy choices throughout their lives. Targeting parents helps reinforce what children are learning in school.  FNP information and workshops are available at:

  • public aid offices
  • WIC sites
  • Head Start Program sites
  • food pantries
  • commodity food sites
  • social service agencies
  • Extension offices

The Family Nutrition Program is funded with Food Stamp Administrative funds by the Food and Nutrition Service of the U.S.D.A.   This website is created by the SD Nutrition Network with support from the U. S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service.
