MISSION


TEAM NUTRITION initiative of the USDA Food and Nutrition Service supports the Child Nutrition Programs

TEAM NUTRITION GOAL

Improve children's lifelong eating and physical activity habits by using the principles of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPyramid.


TEAM NUTRITION - SOUTH DAKOTA GOAL

To give students the knowledge, skills and opportunities for making healthful eating choices and establishing active lifestyles that will benefit them for years to come.

TEAM NUTRITION STRATEGIES IN SOUTH DAKOTA

  • Provide training and technical assistance for child nutrition food service professionals to help them serve meals that look and taste good and meet nutritional standards
  • Provide multifaceted, integrated nutrition education for children and their parents
  • Provide support for healthy eating and physical activity by involving school administrators and other school and community partners

TEAM Nutrition Newsletter

 

USDA and SD TEAM NUTRITION CURRICULUM

  • Nutrition Integration
    • Curriculum for 9th-12th grades with core academic content addressed using nutrition as the topic and example. This integrated curriculum has content standards for science, social studies, language arts, art, and technology identified. Skills for the 21st century such as communication, teamwork, and decision making are embedded throughout the six lessons.
  • Pathways
    • Curriculum for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades with lessons relevant to the Native American culture. Cross referenced with SD Content Standards in math, science, language arts, social studies, and health.
  • Fun with Foodella
    • An interactive 64 page softcover book for 2nd and 3rd grades. Foodella is a smart, trim elephant who shares nutrition information.
  • Nibbles for Health
    • series of newsletter for parents of preschool children, used by early child care agencies
  • Power of Choice
    • Interactive lessons for middle school and high school age youth geared to after-school and summer programs
    • Lessons integrate nutrition education, physical activity and food preparation skills
  • Eat Smart Play Hard in SD
    • Elementary nutrition education curriculum referenced for South Dakota content standards
  • yourSELF
    • Contains materials for health education, home economics or family living classes that will help 7th and 8th grade students learn to make smart choices about eating and physical activity
  • Nutrition Expeditions
    • Behaviorally-based nutrition lessons for high school students in family and consumer sciences and health classes
  • Curriculum Survey for HealthierUS Schools Challenge

  • Focus of the Team Nutrition staff is establishing and supporting groups of local concerned citizens, who wish to improve the nutritional and physical activity status of school-age children

  • Success Stories from South Dakota Schools are shared in newsletters and publications
  • Mini grants are available to fund some activities

HealthierUS SCHOOLS CHALLENGE


FOOD SERVICE SUPPORT

In cooperation with SD Child and Adult Nutrition Services

  • Team Nutrition provides resources and yearly training for school food service directors and staff to help them to improve the eating and learning environment of the cafeteria.
  • A mentoring program pairing a veteran food service director with a partner who is less knowledgeable is part of the support system.
